The Story and Recreation

The wedding at Cana: the forgotten history of a famous canvas
How Paolo Caliari buried the great master Giorgione for a second time under the colors of his palette, and the swings of the protagonists of the monumental work that marveled Europe for centuries.
The work recounts, in a literary tone, the rugged and laborious remodeling of the central scene of the painting from its beginnings to the providential arrival of Ortiz, along with the vicissitudes and misadventures suffered by its author.
This work conforms a realistic fiction essay based on actual events, whose names, places and main historical facts are entirely real. Situations and mental attributions in conjunction with truthful historical and musicological data ― quotations at the footnotes and the ones in the text ― are illustrated, being these last the fruit of our original and exhaustive research, which will be completely edited in a near future.

Our main goal is to offer a clear and enjoyable story, but also informative so that the reader is able to picture and understand all the events the artist went through during fifteen months, until the completion of the commision: a “historical reconstruction” exposing the essential facts in a language closer to the common reader, not involving the required complexity of our future work, still in course.

All the descriptions related to operations and graphic solutions applied by the Veronese on the canvas according to our model, correspond to our analysis of the consecutive musical ensembles which can be identified in the x-ray managed by the Louvre Museum in 1992 when the picture was finally restored. Fifteen years later, the picture was replicated in an exact copy which was destined to the original location, the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore at Venice.
